Compare the same packed belongings
Make a short inventory and separate anything you need with you during travel. Weigh the remaining luggage and measure it fully packed. If you would use a protective box for shipping, record those outer dimensions and its combined weight too. Do not compare a courier quote for an empty suitcase with an airline price for the filled bag.
For each option, check whether every item is accepted. Courier restrictions and airline baggage rules differ. A suitcase that contains prohibited items is not a valid shipping option until those contents have been removed.
Write down the full cost on each side
Find the baggage allowance and extra-bag price attached to your exact airline booking. Check each flight and operating airline, including the return journey if relevant. Record what happens if a bag exceeds the permitted weight or size, and whether the quoted price depends on when you purchase the allowance.
For shipping, use the actual collection and delivery postcodes and finished package measurements. Package size can affect the charge through dimensional weight. Review the booking total, selected protection, packaging costs and any customs estimate. BagBird's terms explain that inaccurate measurements and a different customs assessment can lead to later adjustments.
- Airline plan: baggage charges, any larger airport transfer and the practical cost of carrying everything between stops.
- Shipping plan: the booking total, packaging, any destination storage arrangement and the cost of essentials kept for the journey.
Check who will receive the delivery
Shipping requires a usable address and someone who can accept the luggage. Before naming a hotel, ask its staff whether they accept courier deliveries for future guests, how the label should identify you and whether storage is charged. For a new home, confirm when you can access the property and who can receive a parcel before then.
If nobody can receive the shipment reliably, include that problem in the comparison. A low quote is less useful when the delivery arrangements still need solving.
Use a realistic arrival plan
Write down when each item must be available. Treat the courier's estimated transit time as an estimate, and allow room in your plans for clearance or delivery delays. Keep a small set of clothes and other immediate essentials with you. An event outfit or equipment needed on arrival deserves its own plan.
With airline baggage, consider the transfers and connections during which you will handle the bags yourself. With shipping, consider the collection appointment and paperwork you must finish before leaving.
You can split the load
There is no need to put everything into one option. A traveller might carry a compact bag of immediate essentials and ship clothing needed later. Someone on a short trip might decide that the included airline allowance is sufficient after removing items they will not use.
Keep the two totals beside your delivery arrangements and timing notes. Choose the plan you can actually carry out. Neither method is always cheaper, and a published saving cannot replace a comparison based on your own luggage and itinerary.
