For a move from the United States to the UK, work out the receiving arrangements before the boxes leave. A temporary flat, hotel or university residence each has its own practical limits, so confirm who can accept the pieces and respond while you are travelling.

  • If the shipment accompanies a change of residence, check HMRC's ToR process early and keep any approval reference with the move documents.
  • Copy the full UK postcode and building or flat details from the recipient. Confirm whether the destination is in Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
  • Measure the final outer packaging and verify the units in the quote. Keep the first week's essentials out of pieces being collected in the US.

Check relief before a permanent move

HMRC's transfer of residence guidance explains when personal belongings may qualify for relief. For shipped goods claimed under that process, it instructs you to apply for a reference through ToR1 before shipping and provide the reference for the import declaration. Read the conditions for your situation; approval is not automatic.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland have different rules in some circumstances. Use the guidance for the destination you are actually entering. A holiday shipment or a parcel of newly purchased goods should not simply be described as a household move.

Make the contents easy to explain

Prepare a list as you pack, separating used belongings from new purchases and anything you are sending for someone else. Match each piece to its contents list. Keep receipts or other supporting records where you can retrieve them if a question comes up after collection.

Check current import restrictions and the carrier's acceptance rules before adding food or unusual souvenirs. GOV.UK has separate food guidance for Great Britain and links to Northern Ireland's rules. Keep an uncertain item aside while you confirm whether it can travel in your shipment.

You can quote for luggage and boxes within the booking limits. Every packed item must be within 68 kg and the applicable size limits. Measure the finished package, including its protective box, wheels and handles. Check the prohibited-items list before packing.

Can my bags be delivered to a hotel or university?

Check directly with the property before booking. Confirm that it accepts courier deliveries, which name and reference to use, where the courier should go and how long it can hold your items. Use a contact who can be reached at the destination.
