Shipping to the USA

Shipping belongings to the United States starts with two practical questions: what is travelling, and who will receive it? A suitcase for a holiday and boxes for a permanent move may need different customs treatment. Build your plan around the actual contents and purpose of the shipment.

Prepare your packing list

Before collection

  • Choose a collection address where someone can hand over your labelled items during the confirmed pickup window.
  • Check the recipient's delivery address in the USA, including the required state or province. Confirm any reception or access instructions before booking.
  • Prepare an itemised contents list with accurate descriptions and values. Check the destination's entry requirements and complete the documents requested for your shipment. Used belongings are not automatically exempt from charges.

Prepare an inventory before you seal the bags

For a move involving unaccompanied household or personal effects, US Customs and Border Protection directs importers to Form 3299. Its guidance also calls for a full inventory that can be supplied on request. Check which procedure applies to your shipment; the form is not a blanket promise of free entry.

Write useful descriptions and quantities while the contents are still visible. Keep any requested ownership or travel evidence accessible. Separate the owner's travel details from the shipment details when completing paperwork, and ask for clarification if a field is unclear.

Check the small things tucked inside

CBP distinguishes prohibited goods from restricted goods that need additional permission. Review its current guidance before including food, plants, animal products or other unusual contents. An item being lawful to own at home does not settle whether it can enter the United States.

Make a final pass through toiletry bags, jacket pockets and gifts before closing the shipment. Check the carrier's own contents rules as well. If something needs specialist handling, resolve that before booking instead of hoping a general description will cover it.

When should I send my bags?

Check the available collection dates and delivery estimate for your chosen service before making plans. Allow extra time around a move or holiday, especially for international clearance. Keep your passport, travel documents and anything needed immediately on arrival with you.

Can I send boxes as well as suitcases?

You can quote for luggage and boxes within the booking limits. Every packed item must be within 68 kg and the applicable size limits. Measure the finished package, including its protective box, wheels and handles. Check the prohibited-items list before packing.

Can my bags be delivered to a hotel or university?

Check directly with the property before booking. Confirm that it accepts courier deliveries, which name and reference to use, where the courier should go and how long it can hold your items. Use a contact who can be reached at the destination.
