Check the room before packing for it
Read the accommodation inventory and ask about anything unclear. Find out whether bedding, cooking equipment and storage are supplied, and check any restrictions on what residents can bring. Measure your plans against the space available rather than trying to recreate your entire bedroom in a student room.
Make a short list of things you would prefer to bring from home and things you can decide on after arrival. Course materials deserve a separate check: confirm what you actually need for the first teaching week before packing a heavy stack of books.
Keep the first week with you
Imagine arriving before your shipment. Put the clothes and everyday items needed for registration, orientation and settling in into your travel baggage. Keep your passport, admission documents and accommodation details accessible during the journey, with copies stored somewhere you can reach without opening the shipped luggage.
Think through laundry and the local weather as well as classes. A modest change of clothes that works for your first few days is more useful than packing every favourite outfit together in a parcel you cannot access yet. Review the airline's own rules for anything you carry.
Get the university's actual receiving instructions
A campus address found on a website may lead to an office that does not accept student deliveries. Ask the residence team which address, building name and student identifier to use. Confirm when they can first receive luggage and whether they will hold several pieces until you move in.
Write down any opening hours or storage charges and who to contact after delivery. If your permanent room is not confirmed, ask whether there is an approved alternative. Avoid putting a provisional room number on a label and hoping the receiving team can locate you.
Check the contents before sealing
Review toiletries, hobby supplies and the small items left in desk drawers. BagBird does not accept aerosols, loose lithium batteries or power banks. Some accepted belongings, including electronics, sit on the no-compensation list; check that distinction before deciding what to send.
Create an inventory by package, with recognisable descriptions and quantities. Photograph books and clothing groups before packing the next layer. Leave enough time to replace unsuitable packaging or remove a restricted item without making collection day a last-minute repacking session.
Put travel and shipping on separate schedules
Use the available collection dates and service estimate when planning the shipment. Keep your flight date, accommodation access date and intended delivery arrangements together, but do not treat them as one guaranteed timeline. Arrange a person at home to handle collection if you will already have left.
Student status alone should not be treated as confirmation of a customs exemption. Any relief depends on the destination's requirements and your circumstances. Read the destination's requirements for your own circumstances and keep any requested travel or study documents ready. Complete the shipping information before your attention turns to arrival activities.
