Work back from your room checkout
Write down the last day you can access the room, when you travel and when someone can receive belongings at home. Check collection availability before choosing which day to finish packing. Leave a practical way to deal with a changed collection arrangement rather than relying on the final hour before handing back your keys.
If you will leave before the shipment, agree the handover with a named person who has permission to access the packages. Give them the labels, piece count and your contact details. Do not assume a residence team will manage a private collection without first agreeing to it.
Build a fresh inventory
Start with a room-by-room or shelf-by-shelf review. Separate your belongings from borrowed books, rented equipment and items shared with housemates. Decide what to keep, return, donate or dispose of before buying packaging. An object that fitted your student room may not be useful at home.
Record purchases and gifts separately from belongings you originally brought with you. Keep receipts or other relevant records and describe the actual contents honestly. Returning home does not make every item in the shipment an old possession or establish how customs will treat it.
Check whether the old packaging is still usable
Inspect suitcases and any boxes saved from arrival. Look for weakened seams, damaged corners and missing handles. Reusing a sound container may be practical, but do not rely on tape to hold together a carton that has lost its strength. Obtain replacement packaging while shops and campus facilities are still accessible.
Pack the final contents, then measure and weigh each complete piece again. The outward booking is not a reliable measurement record for a different load. Remove old shipping labels and use only the documents supplied for the new shipment.
Review the route home as a new shipment
Check that the collection and delivery details are correct for this journey, including any move your family has made while you were away. Ask who can receive the luggage and whether there is space for every piece. Keep arrival essentials in your travel baggage if you will reach home first.
Read the destination's current guidance for personal belongings and any returned-goods treatment relevant to your circumstances. Relief for personal goods depends on eligibility and the applicable rules. Keep supporting documents accessible and ask about unclear requirements before entering a declaration; the paperwork from the outward trip is not automatically sufficient.
Leave a clear handover behind
Check toiletries and desk drawers against the prohibited-items list before closing the last bag. Print the correct labels, complete the requested customs steps and photograph the finished pieces. Share the tracking reference with the person receiving the shipment at home, along with the expected piece count.
Keep the room checkout and courier collection records together until the move is complete. When the belongings arrive, compare them with the new inventory rather than relying on memory. Contact support with specific package details if something is missing or damaged, and retain relevant packaging while the issue is reviewed.
