Before collection

  • Confirm the collection address in Vietnam, including apartment or building details. Have someone available to hand over your labelled items.
  • Check the recipient's delivery address in Canada, including the required state or province. Confirm any reception or access instructions before booking.
  • Prepare an itemised contents list with accurate descriptions and values. Check the destination's entry requirements and complete the documents requested for your shipment. Used belongings are not automatically exempt from charges.

Plan goods to follow before travelling

For people moving or returning to settle in Canada, CBSA advises preparing an inventory divided between belongings accompanying you and goods arriving later. Items arriving later need to appear on the original goods-to-follow list to qualify under the relevant entitlement. Present the list at your first point of entry.

Keep the CBSA record for the later shipment. The personal effects accounting document, BSF186, records information including descriptions and values in Canadian dollars. Check the process that applies to your status instead of assuming the arrangements for settlers also cover a short visit.

Keep one working copy of the packing list

Give each piece a simple number and use the same number in your own inventory. Write descriptions that you will recognise later, especially if someone else finishes packing after you have travelled. Photograph the contents before closing the packages and keep the final version of the list with your move documents.

If you change the contents, update the list before handing the shipment over. Keep new purchases distinguishable from belongings already used at home. Ask how any changes affect your customs record rather than assuming an old list covers everything added later.

Can I send boxes as well as suitcases?

You can quote for luggage and boxes within the booking limits. Every packed item must be within 68 kg and the applicable size limits. Measure the finished package, including its protective box, wheels and handles. Check the prohibited-items list before packing.

Can my bags be delivered to a hotel or university?

Check directly with the property before booking. Confirm that it accepts courier deliveries, which name and reference to use, where the courier should go and how long it can hold your items. Use a contact who can be reached at the destination.
