Work out how your belongings will enter Australia

Australian Border Force uses the term unaccompanied personal effects for belongings that arrive separately from their owner. There must be a connection with your travel, and the goods must meet the relevant conditions. Its guidance calls for a B534 statement when clearing these effects. Check the current instructions for your circumstances before collection.

Describe the contents rather than writing only 'personal items'. Keep your inventory and travel information together. Customs concessions depend on eligibility; sending a used suitcase does not by itself establish that no charges will apply.

Give outdoor equipment a separate packing check

Australia's agriculture department assesses personal effects for biosecurity risks. Clean and dry shoes, sports equipment and other items exposed to soil, plants or animals before packing. Check pockets, soles and the corners of bags. Inspect souvenirs made from natural materials against the official import guidance.

Make relevant items easy to identify in the inventory. Cleaning does not replace a declaration or rule out inspection. Review the current biosecurity conditions before including food, plant material or animal products; leave an uncertain item out until you have an answer.
